About Utah Avalanche Center
The Utah Avalanche Center (UAC) is a nonprofit organization that provides essential services to outdoor enthusiasts and professionals throughout Utah. Since its founding in 1980 in collaboration with the US Forest Service, the UAC has become a leading force in avalanche forecasting, education, and awareness. The Friends of the Utah Avalanche Center was established in 1990 as a nonprofit to bridge the gap between available funding and expenses of operating an avalanche center while also increasing education and awareness.
The UAC’s focus on safety is evident in its mission to keep people on top of The Greatest Snow On Earth®. It provides avalanche forecasting across Utah and covers eight geographic areas: Logan, Ogden, Salt Lake, the Uintas, Provo, Skyline, Moab, and the Abajos. The UAC benefits from a longstanding relationship with the National Weather Service and publishes daily forecasts that are available for free on its website, mobile application, and by phone.
In addition to forecasting, the UAC offers avalanche education classes to both non-motorized and motorized backcountry travelers throughout the State of Utah. Students learn how to recognize avalanche terrain, travel safely in the backcountry based on current conditions, and rescue a buried partner. The UAC offers on average 50 courses through the season serving over 1,000 students throughout the state of Utah. The organization aims to arm students with the basic skills and knowledge needed to travel safely in the backcountry and better prepare them for higher level avalanche instruction.
The UAC provides a wide range of avalanche awareness classes, talks, and events. The Know Before You Go (KBYG) program, launched by the UAC in 2005, has reached over 200,000 Utahns since that time. Currently, KBYG reaches over 8,000 Utah school kids and adults each year. Other awareness talks include Get the Gear, The Science of Avalanches, Terrain Management, and Human Factors.
The UAC works closely with multiple agencies and organizations including Utah Department of Transportation, Utah Department of Public Safety, Utah Office of Outdoor Recreation, ski resorts, guide operators, and local search and rescue teams, to share up-to-date information and training. The UAC partners with local and national outdoor recreation dealers and manufacturers that serve both motorized and non-motorized users. It operates and relies on funding from grants, private donations, businesses, and events.
The UAC employs 18 experts with over 300 years of combined experience who are committed to saving lives through avalanche forecasting, education, and awareness. The organization’s success is rooted in the understanding that the interests of both people and wildlife are intertwined, and both must be served if achievements are to last.

A Sud – Ecologia e Cooperazione is an Italian association that was established in 2003. Its core focus is on addressing environmental conflicts and providing support to men and women who fight for the defence and resistance of their territories across Italy and the world.
The association works towards creating a platform for these communities by providing them with a voice and space on their channels and planning alternate methods of managing cities, states, and the planet. Access Fund
CharityAccess Fund
Access Fund is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advocating for the climbing community in the pursuit of sustainable access and conservation of the climbing environment. Climbing, as a sport, offers climbers a range of experiences, from pure joy and limitless challenge to wild freedom and a like-minded community. However, the places where climbers find these experiences need protection, and Access Fund strives to inspire climbers to care for these special places while ensuring that every climber has the opportunity to enjoy them.
Founded in 1991, Access Fund initially fought for legal and physical access to climbing sites. Over the years, the organization has won significant victories in this battle. However, with the sport’s explosive growth, new challenges have emerged, and land managers now question whether climbers can access these sites sustainably without causing destruction. Access Fund has a 30-year history of advocacy victories, making it uniquely placed to face the new challenges head-on, fight for sustainable access, and protect and conserve the land. By building a nationwide community of inspired advocates, Access Fund is ensuring a sustainable future for climbing.
To meet the exponential growth in climbing, Access Fund is scaling up its efforts to keep pace. By becoming a member of the largest and fastest-growing community of advocates, individuals can contribute to the fight to protect America’s climbing.
AIARE
CharityAIARE
Established in 1998 as a nonprofit educational organization, AIARE (American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education) has been dedicated to developing an evidence-based avalanche education model for backcountry users. With the belief that avalanche education, research, and training can prevent injuries and fatalities, AIARE has been disseminating research-based avalanche curriculum to over 110 Providers nationwide, as well as in France, Chile, and Argentina. The organization also offers professional and avalanche instructor training courses.
The seed for AIARE was planted during a chance meeting between mountain guides in the California Sierra in 1992. AIARE co-founder Jean Pavillard taught courses for aspiring guides and noticed that their avalanche knowledge was somewhat uneven, attributing this to varying curriculum and quality among the avalanche education providers they’d learned from. Together with Karl Klassen, another mountain guide, they agreed that it was time for a unified approach to avalanche education. At the time, there was no nationally recognized curriculum despite the increasing popularity of backcountry recreation.
Tom Murphy, the course director for Pavillard’s guiding company, recognized the need for an organized framework for assessing risk and moving through avalanche terrain. Klassen applied his curriculum development experience from the Canadian Avalanche Association to assist Pavillard and Murphy with their avalanche courses, and from this collaboration, AIARE was born in 1998.
From the start, AIARE integrated national and international standards and incorporated a decision-makers’ approach to risk management in avalanche education. The organization initiated an instructor training program to maintain consistency among instructors and provide them with best practices for interacting with students. AIARE consults with qualified instructors when developing new curriculum and supplementary materials to ensure their products are based on a wide variety of experience, background, and knowledge. The result is a consensus-driven process that has produced an avalanche education program and training courses that meet the needs of the trainers and course participants alike.
Today, AIARE curriculum provides avalanche education to more backcountry travelers than any other single avalanche education organization in the United States and trains over 100 new instructors every season. AIARE continues to develop standardized curricula for a complete program of avalanche courses that meets the needs of students at all levels, from recreational to professional, from novice to advanced.
Aktion Agrar e.V.
CharityAktion Agrar e.V.
Aktion Agrar e.V. is a German charity organization that campaigns against current agricultural practices that have strayed from the common good, and advocates for sustainable, socially responsible, and rural farming practices. They strongly oppose the agricultural industry lobby and believe that the much-needed agricultural turnaround can only be achieved through a collective effort with farmers and consumers.
With the growing market power of agricultural and food companies, declining species and structural diversity, and the current European and national agricultural policy fueling these developments, Aktion Agrar is dedicated to tackling the necessary change. They believe that the image of agriculture propagated by the industry lobby endangers not only the climate and the environment but also the existence of many farms and a lively rural area.
Aktion Agrar works with farmers, city dwellers, and enthusiastic campaigners to create momentum for the agricultural turnaround. They support active initiatives and courageous farmers who show that things can be done differently, offering them a platform to showcase their efforts. They also create creative campaigns that demand concrete political steps for rural agriculture that is ecological, socially acceptable, and animal-friendly.
Aktion Agrar offers information on current topics, workshops, and discussions with decision-makers to engage everyone since agricultural policy affects all. Their hundreds of supporters ensure their political and financial independence. Aktion Agrar also designs hands-on campaigns that offer many opportunities for people to stand up for a sustainable, better, and different agricultural policy.
