About Community Action Nepal

Community Action Nepal is an organization that works to improve the quality of life for remote communities living in the Tsum-Nubri valleys of the Nepalese Himalayas.

The charity focuses on delivering education, health and livelihood programs that enable the communities to become more self-sufficient, resilient, and less reliant on external donations. CAN’s work began in 1989 when the organization was asked to improve the conditions of labor in the Himalayan trekking industry.

The request soon expanded to include infrastructure improvements in the village of Ghunsa, and similar requests followed from other regions as word spread. During the years of civil unrest between 1996 and 2006, CAN, along with other charities, played a critical role in filling the gap left by the government resources focused on the civil war. CAN provided direct support to schools, health posts, and other neglected community projects.

In the years following the civil war, government funding was unreliable, so CAN continued to provide funding and support to projects in the most sustainable and appropriate manner possible. CAN has been active in Nepal for over 30 years and has delivered or directly supported over 45 projects, making a meaningful and lasting impact on the communities it serves.

Established in 1998 as a nonprofit educational organization, AIARE (American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education) has been dedicated to developing an evidence-based avalanche education model for backcountry users. With the belief that avalanche education, research, and training can prevent injuries and fatalities, AIARE has been disseminating research-based avalanche curriculum to over 110 Providers nationwide, as well as in France, Chile, and Argentina. The organization also offers professional and avalanche instructor training courses.

The seed for AIARE was planted during a chance meeting between mountain guides in the California Sierra in 1992. AIARE co-founder Jean Pavillard taught courses for aspiring guides and noticed that their avalanche knowledge was somewhat uneven, attributing this to varying curriculum and quality among the avalanche education providers they’d learned from. Together with Karl Klassen, another mountain guide, they agreed that it was time for a unified approach to avalanche education. At the time, there was no nationally recognized curriculum despite the increasing popularity of backcountry recreation.

Tom Murphy, the course director for Pavillard’s guiding company, recognized the need for an organized framework for assessing risk and moving through avalanche terrain. Klassen applied his curriculum development experience from the Canadian Avalanche Association to assist Pavillard and Murphy with their avalanche courses, and from this collaboration, AIARE was born in 1998.

From the start, AIARE integrated national and international standards and incorporated a decision-makers’ approach to risk management in avalanche education. The organization initiated an instructor training program to maintain consistency among instructors and provide them with best practices for interacting with students. AIARE consults with qualified instructors when developing new curriculum and supplementary materials to ensure their products are based on a wide variety of experience, background, and knowledge. The result is a consensus-driven process that has produced an avalanche education program and training courses that meet the needs of the trainers and course participants alike.

Today, AIARE curriculum provides avalanche education to more backcountry travelers than any other single avalanche education organization in the United States and trains over 100 new instructors every season. AIARE continues to develop standardized curricula for a complete program of avalanche courses that meets the needs of students at all levels, from recreational to professional, from novice to advanced.

    About Collective Climate Justice

Collective Climate Justice is a collective of passionate individuals from diverse backgrounds who believe that governments and profit-driven companies are unwilling and incapable of preventing the climate crisis and the widespread environmental destruction it causes. The group believes it is necessary to take action and contribute to a global climate justice movement. In recent years, Collective Climate Justice has set up various climate camps in different locations where people can live together, experiment, and prepare for action days. These camps offer a vibrant space for lively discussions and networking, and for people to find reference groups.

In 2021, the collective set up two camps: the first in July on the stadium wasteland in Zurich, which served as the base camp for the Rise Up For Change, targeting Credit Suisse and UBS. The second camp was in collaboration with organizations and individuals from various social movements in Basel as part of the Zapatista journey Viaje por la vida. The Dreirosenmatte was occupied for around four days and offered an informative and combative program for three days. In 2020, the collective participated in Rise Up For Change and occupied the Bundesplatz in September. The Bundesplatz served as a place for camping, exchange, delicious food, and concerts for 47 hours.

In 2019, Collective Climate Justice organized a climate camp on the Voltamatte, and action days focused on the Swiss financial center and its role in contributing to the climate crisis. In July of that year, hundreds of people blocked access to the Credit Suisse headquarters in Zurich’s Paradeplatz and the UBS headquarters in Basel’s Aeschenvorstadt. These locations were chosen because the two large banks are the leading players in the Swiss financial center and are largely responsible for global warming. The blockade was intended to last two days, but UBS and Credit Suisse applied for eviction and filed a complaint.

In 2018, the collective organized an open civil disobedience action for the first time in Switzerland and peacefully blocked the access routes to the Basel oil port for over 36 hours, interrupting the operation of the port, which is responsible for one-third of all oil imports into Switzerland. In 2017, the Horburgpark in Basel became a place for people to live well, network, and educate themselves. The Climate Games Basel were organized, calling for decentralized actions against the climate catastrophe and those responsible for it. Over 20 actions showed Basel residents the creative protest and the opportunity to become active. The Collective Climate Justice depends on donations, sympathizers, participants, and solidarity funds.

    About Code Rood

Code Rood is a collective effort among individuals who are united in their opposition to the fossil fuel industry and its influence. This encompasses all forms of oil, gas, and coal. The most critical aspect shared by these individuals is that the effects of global warming and the destruction caused by the fossil fuel industry cannot be addressed through individual actions alone. Code Rood works to confront the corporations responsible for extracting, transporting, and burning fossil fuels, as well as the governments that permit these activities.

Amsterdam and Rotterdam are the principal oil and coal ports in Europe, and the largest gas field in Europe is located in the earthquake-prone Groningen region, making the Dutch government chiefly responsible for the effects of global warming. Code Rood contributes to creating a resilient movement by organizing yearly mass action events that aim to disrupt the fossil fuel industry’s infrastructure and temporarily shut it down. The ultimate goal is to bring about a structural shift in how energy is generated.

Code Rood takes civil disobedience to the next level by making it visible and tangible. This occurs by openly announcing the day of action and mobilizing people both nationally and internationally. Code Rood also provides assistance to local communities that experience the direct effects of fossil fuel extraction. Additionally, Code Rood believes that workers in the fossil fuel industry should not bear the brunt of the necessary transition to green energy. As a result, they supported the FNV’s proposal for a coal fund for workers in coal ports and coal-fired power plants.

Code Rood stands in solidarity with other movements opposed to the fossil fuel industry, climate change, and other types of oppression, extortion, repression, and discrimination. On June 24, 2017, Code Rood’s first massive action involved approximately 350 individuals who blockaded coal in the Amsterdam port. Because Code Rood is relatively new, there is still a lot of work to be done to establish an identity and a long-term strategy. The charity relies entirely on donations, sympathizers, participants, and solidarity funds.

The association works towards creating a platform for these communities by providing them with a voice and space on their channels and planning alternate methods of managing cities, states, and the planet. A Sud also offers support and tools to these communities through independent research, planning, and education in schools, universities, territories and companies.

The association aims to create solidarity bridges between the North and the South of the world and understand the common thread that links them all. They opened the first Environmental Conflict Documentation Center in 2007, which has now become an independent and autonomous research organization dealing with mapping the most emblematic conflicts caused by the control of natural resources and common goods.

The center also focuses on broad themes such as climate change, energy and production models, and ecological reconversion. A Sud believes that it is essential to encourage research activities and documentation to support concrete action and territorial intervention.

    About HCP Cureblindness

HCP Cureblindness is a non-profit organization dedicated to restoring sight and hope to patients who may not have had access to care. Founded in 1995 by Drs. Sanduk Ruit and Geoff Tabin, the organization is rooted in the Tilganga Eye Centre in Kathmandu, Nepal, which was the first outpatient cataract surgery facility in the Himalayan region. The founders were inspired to take action after recognizing that cataracts are treatable and cause 70% of unnecessary blindness in Nepal. Despite facing significant challenges along the way, their mission has led to significant innovation in the field of ophthalmology.

The doctors have been teaching their cataract surgery technique at ophthalmology meetings all over the world, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology Annual Meeting, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons annual meetings, and the World Ophthalmology Congress. Their work has been instrumental in improving the lives of patients and families affected by blindness.

This vast range enables almost infinite possibilities in circular knits. Thanks to local Australian production, the company can offer minimum order quantities as low as 500 meters per order.

The creative, experienced, and energetic team at ABMT Australia constantly strives for innovation and challenges the status quo. A strong commitment to environmental responsibility drives the company to produce high-quality products with minimal environmental impact, achieved through responsible farming, cleaner manufacturing, and the utilization of sustainable natural fibers.

ABMT Australia takes pride in its efforts to substantially reduce the environmental footprint typically associated with textile manufacturing. Cleaner production measures have been integrated into the Australian plant’s original design, and ongoing projects continuously target reductions in electricity, gas, and water consumption. The on-site 5-stage water treatment plant enables up to 85% of ABMT’s water to be reused for manufacturing or shared with third-party recycled water programs in agriculture, parklands, and industry.

Established by ABMT Australia in 2005, ABMT China is a modern, privately-owned enterprise specializing in natural fiber and natural fiber blend terry, fleece, ponte, double-knit, and jersey. Located on the Ning-shao Plain near Ningbo, the factory enjoys a strategic location, offering easy access to Ningbo Airport, Shanghai via fast train, and the deepwater Beilun Harbor.

The Chinese operation draws on the success of its Australian counterpart, enabling greater processing efficiencies, product continuity, and innovation. Quality is a top priority, with staff undergoing professional development courses to enhance their service levels and industry expertise. This focus ensures successful partnerships with clients from diverse markets, including mainland China, Vietnam, USA, Canada, Australia, and Europe.

In a recent development, ABMT China has completed the construction of a state-of-the-art testing, color, and development laboratory, further emphasizing its commitment to quality and innovation.

However, with the sport’s explosive growth, new challenges have emerged, and land managers now question whether climbers can access these sites sustainably without causing destruction. Access Fund has a 30-year history of advocacy victories, making it uniquely placed to face the new challenges head-on, fight for sustainable access, and protect and conserve the land. By building a nationwide community of inspired advocates, Access Fund is ensuring a sustainable future for climbing.

To meet the exponential growth in climbing, Access Fund is scaling up its efforts to keep pace. By becoming a member of the largest and fastest-growing community of advocates, individuals can contribute to the fight to protect America’s climbing.

    AIARE

    About Alpine Initiatives

Alpine Initiatives is a charity organization that believes that the mountains should be accessible to everyone. The Canary Club, a program initiated by Alpine Initiatives, produces positive mountain experiences for people of all generations. The organization acknowledges the desire for people to connect with nature and each other, to foster a sense of community and maintain healthy environments. As the mountains are the organization’s home, they evoke a sense of being, shape creativity, inspire a kinder spirit, and encourage individuals to take the initiative to do more.

The Canary Club brings together passionate people to participate in mountain-related activities, including ski film premieres, symposiums on sustainability and art, avalanche safety courses, banked slaloms, backcountry courses for at-risk youth, and ski sauvages. If it involves the mountains, inspires, connects, and encourages growth, the Canary Club is a part of it.

The Canary Club started small in a few well-known locations in the spring of 2019. Alpine Initiatives aims to help facilitate and manage these programs from start to completion with the help of its network of industry partners, media outlets, and professional ambassadors. The organization believes that one initiative begets another, and that spending time in the mountains can have a positive impact on the outside world. By finding the right local partners in more communities, the Canary Club will hopefully continue to grow and provide positive mountain experiences for generations to come.
