About Sedex SMETA

Sedex SMETA is a social auditing methodology that enables businesses to assess working conditions at their sites and suppliers to promote ethical trade practices.

The audit process involves a physical assessment of the supplier’s workplace, allowing the auditor to gather accurate information about the conditions on the ground.

This helps businesses monitor workers’ health and safety, assess suppliers, and ensure zero tolerance for human rights abuses, such as child and forced labor. Once the audit is completed, buyer and supplier businesses can collaborate on a Corrective Action Plan (CAPR) to address any issues identified during the audit.

Businesses or customers can request the SMETA audit and provides a visible way to demonstrate ethical trade practices. The audit can be shared with multiple customers via the Sedex platform, making it a valuable tool for improving working conditions and attracting new customers.

Sedex SMETA is an effective solution for promoting ethical trade practices in the supply chain.

Established in 1998 as a nonprofit educational organization, AIARE (American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education) has been dedicated to developing an evidence-based avalanche education model for backcountry users. With the belief that avalanche education, research, and training can prevent injuries and fatalities, AIARE has been disseminating research-based avalanche curriculum to over 110 Providers nationwide, as well as in France, Chile, and Argentina. The organization also offers professional and avalanche instructor training courses.

The seed for AIARE was planted during a chance meeting between mountain guides in the California Sierra in 1992. AIARE co-founder Jean Pavillard taught courses for aspiring guides and noticed that their avalanche knowledge was somewhat uneven, attributing this to varying curriculum and quality among the avalanche education providers they’d learned from. Together with Karl Klassen, another mountain guide, they agreed that it was time for a unified approach to avalanche education. At the time, there was no nationally recognized curriculum despite the increasing popularity of backcountry recreation.

Tom Murphy, the course director for Pavillard’s guiding company, recognized the need for an organized framework for assessing risk and moving through avalanche terrain. Klassen applied his curriculum development experience from the Canadian Avalanche Association to assist Pavillard and Murphy with their avalanche courses, and from this collaboration, AIARE was born in 1998.

From the start, AIARE integrated national and international standards and incorporated a decision-makers’ approach to risk management in avalanche education. The organization initiated an instructor training program to maintain consistency among instructors and provide them with best practices for interacting with students. AIARE consults with qualified instructors when developing new curriculum and supplementary materials to ensure their products are based on a wide variety of experience, background, and knowledge. The result is a consensus-driven process that has produced an avalanche education program and training courses that meet the needs of the trainers and course participants alike.

Today, AIARE curriculum provides avalanche education to more backcountry travelers than any other single avalanche education organization in the United States and trains over 100 new instructors every season. AIARE continues to develop standardized curricula for a complete program of avalanche courses that meets the needs of students at all levels, from recreational to professional, from novice to advanced.

About Scottish Avalanche Information Service (“SAIS”)

The Scottish Avalanche Information Service (SAIS) is a service that provides daily forecasts on the avalanche hazard in the 6 most popular areas of Scotland during the winter season.

Originally started in 1988 as the Scottish Avalanche Project, the service was funded by the Scottish Sports Council and provided forecasting in 2 areas, Glencoe and the North Cairngorms. After a successful pilot scheme, the project became permanent and was renamed the Scottish Avalanche Information Service.

Over the years, more areas were added to the service until there were a total of 6, with Torridon being the latest addition in 2014.

SAIS has become the main source of dissemination of the Snow and Avalanche Reports, with a website that receives over 3,000 visits on a busy winter’s day.

    About Science Based Targets initiative

The Science Based Targets initiative is a collaboration between several organizations committed to helping companies and financial institutions reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by setting science-based targets.

Through this initiative, companies can specify how much and how quickly they need to reduce their emissions in order to future-proof their growth and gain a competitive advantage in the low-carbon economy.

The initiative offers resources and guidance to reduce barriers to adoption, defines and promotes best practice, and independently assesses and approves companies’ targets.

Many of the world’s largest companies have already committed to set science-based targets through this initiative, which can lead to increased innovation, improved profitability and competitiveness, strengthened investor confidence, and reduced regulatory uncertainty.

    AIARE

Aktion Agrar e.V. is a German charity organization that campaigns against current agricultural practices that have strayed from the common good, and advocates for sustainable, socially responsible, and rural farming practices. They strongly oppose the agricultural industry lobby and believe that the much-needed agricultural turnaround can only be achieved through a collective effort with farmers and consumers.

With the growing market power of agricultural and food companies, declining species and structural diversity, and the current European and national agricultural policy fueling these developments, Aktion Agrar is dedicated to tackling the necessary change. They believe that the image of agriculture propagated by the industry lobby endangers not only the climate and the environment but also the existence of many farms and a lively rural area.

Aktion Agrar works with farmers, city dwellers, and enthusiastic campaigners to create momentum for the agricultural turnaround. They support active initiatives and courageous farmers who show that things can be done differently, offering them a platform to showcase their efforts. They also create creative campaigns that demand concrete political steps for rural agriculture that is ecological, socially acceptable, and animal-friendly.

Aktion Agrar offers information on current topics, workshops, and discussions with decision-makers to engage everyone since agricultural policy affects all. Their hundreds of supporters ensure their political and financial independence. Aktion Agrar also designs hands-on campaigns that offer many opportunities for people to stand up for a sustainable, better, and different agricultural policy.

    About Pertex

Pertex is a renowned brand of synthetic fabrics, widely used in outdoor and sports apparel. Its origins date back to 1979 when it was established by Perseverance Mills Ltd. in Padiham, England. Initially, the brand specialized in industrial textile production and was approached by Hamish Hamilton, a climber and mountaineer with a concept for a new fabric. The fabric was designed to be wind-resistant and transport moisture through capillary action, woven from multifilament synthetic yarns, and high-density.

Buffalo Systems Ltd. in Sheffield became the first company to use Pertex fabrics in their pile-lined sleeping bags. Later, Pertex developed its expertise in heat calendering, which allowed the production of down-proof fabrics for sleeping bags and down jackets. This process involved reducing the interstices between yarns, resulting in low air permeability and high resistance to down and fiber migration.

Currently, Mitsui & Co., Ltd. of Japan owns Pertex, which has become a trusted brand for high-quality and lightweight synthetic fabrics. It is well-known for its innovative technologies and continues to be a go-to choice for manufacturers in the outdoor and sports apparel industries.

Access Fund has a 30-year history of advocacy victories, making it uniquely placed to face the new challenges head-on, fight for sustainable access, and protect and conserve the land. By building a nationwide community of inspired advocates, Access Fund is ensuring a sustainable future for climbing.

To meet the exponential growth in climbing, Access Fund is scaling up its efforts to keep pace. By becoming a member of the largest and fastest-growing community of advocates, individuals can contribute to the fight to protect America’s climbing.

    About British Mountaineering Council

The British Mountaineering Council (BMC) serves as the representative body responsible for protecting the freedoms and promoting the interests of climbers, hill walkers, and mountaineers, including ski-mountaineers. Its primary focus is to advocate for these individuals and ensure their pursuits can be enjoyed safely and responsibly.

While the BMC acknowledges that climbing, hill walking, and mountaineering inherently involve risks of personal injury or even death, it emphasizes that participants should be aware of these dangers and accept them willingly. In doing so, individuals engaging in these activities must take responsibility for their own actions, ensuring they approach their pursuits with caution and preparedness. By fostering this mindset, the BMC aims to create a community that enjoys the beauty and challenges of the outdoors while maintaining a strong commitment to safety and responsibility.

    About Boardman Tasker

The Boardman Tasker Trust is dedicated to promoting mountain-related literature by providing an annual award to authors who create outstanding works centered around the mountain environment. The £3,000 prize commemorates the lives of Peter Boardman and Joe Tasker, and is awarded to the author or co-authors of an original work that makes a significant contribution to mountain literature.

Peter Boardman and Joe Tasker were last seen on Mount Everest on May 17, 1982, attempting to traverse The Pinnacles on the unclimbed North East Ridge at approximately 8,250 meters. Their untimely deaths marked the end of an extraordinary era in British mountaineering. The duo left behind a legacy of remarkable mountaineering achievements that pushed the boundaries of alpine climbing techniques on Himalayan peaks, with their ascent of the West Wall of Changabang in 1976 being a prime example.

Beyond their climbing accomplishments, they also authored books that are now considered classics in the genre, continuing to sell steadily in various formats nearly forty years later. Their personal interactions inspired and changed the lives of those who knew, climbed with, or simply encountered them.

The Boardman Tasker Award not only seeks to remember and honor Pete and Joe, but also aims to recognize and reward exceptional literature that captures the essence of the mountain environment. By doing so, the award aims to challenge and inspire readers, potentially leading them to explore the world of mountains, write about their experiences, or view the world in a new light. In this way, the award perpetuates and refreshes the challenge and inspiration of mountains through literature, keeping the memory of Peter Boardman and Joe Tasker alive. The winning book is one that Pete and Joe would be proud to be associated with.

Access Fund is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advocating for the climbing community in the pursuit of sustainable access and conservation of the climbing environment. Climbing, as a sport, offers climbers a range of experiences, from pure joy and limitless challenge to wild freedom and a like-minded community. However, the places where climbers find these experiences need protection, and Access Fund strives to inspire climbers to care for these special places while ensuring that every climber has the opportunity to enjoy them.

By building a nationwide community of inspired advocates, Access Fund is ensuring a sustainable future for climbing.

    AIARE
