Since its establishment in 1968, the company has been producing outdoor clothing, footwear, and related equipment for climbers and outdoor enthusiasts. The logo of the company is inspired by Half Dome, a well-known peak in Yosemite National Park.

While the label was originally created for outdoor enthusiasts, it has expanded its focus in the late 1990s to include streetwear fashion, and is now considered a symbol of streetwear style. The company was acquired by VF Corporation in 2000.
